Heart to Heart: Cardiovascular PBI

This piece is an overview of a project-based instruction unit that was created to help students learn about the cardiovascular system through inquiries about cardiac disease and blood pressure, and interacting with medical professionals.

DNA & Forensics Inquiry

This lesson includes an introduction to gel electrophoresis and its practical uses.  Students use their newly acquired knowledge to help a forensic analyist identify the correct perpetrator of a jewel heist.

Going Nuclear Inquiry

Students investigate the radiation levels of local plant, soil, and water samples to determine which areas in their neighborhood have higher levels of radiation concluding with a class letter to local officials.

Creating with Biology Rubric

This project allows students to explore the intersection of art and science.  Students create an art piece that will engage and educate the public about a biology concept.  Student choice and voice is central to the success of this project.

Mendel's Peas & Heredity

Students engage with sample crosses to hypothesize the results of the crosses and analyze the actual outcomes to explain how a trait is inherited.  Students are introduced to recessive and dominant traits as well as homozygous vs heterozygous individuals.

Heredity Choice Board Activity

This lesson utilizes a choice board format to allow for student choice and differentiation.  Students choose to learn more about Punnett squares from either a video or reading.  Students then create either a practice problem for their peers or a drawing that helps explain heredity vocabulary.

Bug Hunt: Natural Selection

Students explore how Natural Selection affects populations through time by utilizing a NetLogo Simulation.  Students act as birds of prey to catch simulated bugs based on their speeds.  This lesson utilizes Nearpod, collaboration boards, and class discussion to introduce evolution and natural selection ideas.

Woolly Mammoth Central Dogma Review Activity

Students practice transcription and translation using a fragment of Woolly Mammoth DNA.  This lesson engages students with interesting current science while creating a real-life scenario in which the transcription and translation knowledge may be used.

Mitosis lesson

An interactive Nearpod lesson in which students collaborate to describe the different aspects of a cell that is going through mitosis.  This lesson includes a video explanation of mitosis, a written summary of mitosis, an activity to create a pneumonic device to remember the stages of mitosis, and a matching review activity.

Skittle Lab: Chemical Formulas

This lesson focused on using a scientific model to represent molecules and chemical formulas.  Using the skittle model, students can interpret how many of each element is in each chemical formula, conceptualize subscripts and coefficients, and discuss model limitations. Pre-assessment included.
